Description:
In this work of handwritten poetry titled "Welcome to our guests", Gerrit Smith writes of William Lloyd Garrison, "friend of black & white mankind!" in 12 rhyming stanzas. The poem not only prasies Garrison, but discusses the upcoming 1864 presidential election and the duty to "stand by Lincoln's side". A shorter poem sharing the same title but beginning, "Dear Walther" is also written on page 5. On verso, Smith seems to acknowledge sending these poems to Garrison's daughter, Fannie Garrison Villard, writing "Here the rhymes, my dear Fannie, you asked me to send. Oh were you but [illegible] & truly my friend[.] You'd have asked me to put all my rhymes in the fire[.] And never again to rhyme-writing aspire!"

Above the first line of the poem, the number "154" is written in pencil. The first poem appears to end on page 3 after stanza 12 and a new poem also titled "Welcome to our guests" begins on page 5, consisting of 4 stanzas.
