Letter from Caroline Maria Seymour, West Newton, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1865 Dec[embe]r 18th
Description:
In this letter to Samuel May, Caroline Maria Severance sends money so "that the staunch old 'Liberator' may retire from the field, without debt or embarrassment." She adds that "while states, justifying our words fears, attempt to perpetuate, or to re-enact, the old Barbarism, under new forms, I can but feel that the 'Old Guard' needs still to stand". In the postscript, Severance concedes her Liberator subscription may be arrears and asks to be notified if it is.
Holograph, signed.
Title devised by cataloger.
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in blue ink on white, lined paper. In the head- spine corner a note written in black ink reads, "$5 enclosed - which I handed to R.F.W. Replied to the letter". Under the salutation the number "176" is written in pencil.
