Letter from Caroline Maria Seymour, West Newton, [Massachusetts], to William Lloyd Garrison, [1869] Oct[ober] 23
Description:
Caroline Maria Severance writes to William Lloyd Garrison apologizing for missing his visit and sharing her hope that he will go to Hartford, stating "I think it would do a world of good." She tells Garrison just to come for one night of the convention if he cannot stay for two, reminding him "you will be so near home." Severance writes that Lucy Stone will not be able to attend but she "feel[s] it very important to give a strong N. England influence" to the convention. On verso, a note written in a different handwriting describes traveling by train to Hartford.
Holograph, signed.
Title devised by cataloger.
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. Under the salutation, the number "57" is written in pencil and in the head- fore corner, "1869" is added in pencil after the date. The letter is written on the back of a printed letter inviting the recipient to respond to a proposed convention called by the Executive Committee of the New England Woman Suffrage Association and dated "Boston, August 5th, 1869." A note written over the printed letter, is written in a different handwriting from Severance, and describes the trains to travel to Hartford.
