Letter from Luther Wiswall, Brooks, [Maine], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1846 Aug[ust] 25
Description:
Luther Wiswall writes to Amos A. Phelps about the Missionary meeting in which Wiswall won't be able to attend. He writes that his church "cannot do a great deal for missions. They are reviewing what is contributed untill they see where they can send it without encouraging Slaveholding Christianity. They will not sustain the American board in this present position." He writes about Gerrit Smith's views and about his discontent with the American Board.
