Letter from Thomas Vickers, Heidelberg, [Germany], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1863 Nov[ember] 17
Description:
Thomas Vickers writes to William Lloyd Garrison discussing his bill for the Liberator and calling the paper "invaluable to me - I should feel entirely lost without it." Vickers then discusses the "convulsion" in the theological world, labeling the book "Life of Jesus" by Ernest Renan as "only a war trumpet" and discussing its affect on the work of David Strauss, who Vickers calls "one of the first and best of German writers." He discusses meeting David Strauss and arranging to translate and copyright his work in the United States, asking Garrison if any Boston publishers might be interested in publishing his translation. He asks Garrison to "make a few inquries for" him, suggesting that "the reprinter of Renan would undoubtedly be willing to print Strauss."
