Letter from Elizur Wright, New York, to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1836 March 3
Description:
Elizur Wright Jr. writes to Amos A. Phelps that the committee has voted on Phelps' plan for prosecuting the "enquiry about northern slaveholding" and it was decided that "it is not best to print the schedules of questions. A large issue of them however judiciously distributed would almost to a certainty gain a notoriety which would hinder the purpose of the enquiry." He further asks that if Phelps can "gain by a written correspondence, or otherwise, the facts in relation to a single county of Connecticut, the committee suppose the rest of the state may be judged by that."
