Letter from Elizur Wright, Dorchester, [Massachusetts], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1840 Aug[ust] 20
Description:
Elizur Wright Jr. writes a copy of a statement made stating that Oberlin is not the only institution which does not discriminate. He writes, "With no feeling but good will towards the Oberlin institute, I should be exceedingly sorry to have British philanthropists taught to regard it as the only institution in our country free from the pestilence of caste. I cannot believe the agents of Oberlin would intentionally leave such an impression. Were they to be reminded of the Oneida Institute under the Presidency of Rev. B...Green, they could not fail to admit the justice of its claims to the first honor in the warefare against the American prejudice of color."
