Letter from Sarah Moore Grimkè, Amesbury, [Massachusetts], to Mary S. Parker, 1837 July 11
Description:
On the first sheet, this letter, written by Sarah Moore Grimkè to Mary S. Parker, goes from pages 1-3 and continues into the second sheet. In this letter, Sarah writes her views on the Province of women. She writes, "For examining this important subject I shall depend solely on the Bible to designate the sphere of woman because I believe almost every thing that has been written on this subject has been the result of the opinions of man formed without reference to the simple truths developed in the scriptures." She discusses her views on the differences between Adam and Eve and writes, "They both fell from innocence & consequently from happiness but not from equality." There is a separate letter on the last page of the first sheet written from Caroline Chamberlain to the Grimke Sisters dated June 30th, 1837 in Cambridgeport, requesting that they address the Cambridgeport Female Anti-Slavery Society on "the subject of slavery." She also adds that the Cambridgeport Female Moral Reform Society "are desirious that you should address them about the same time."
