Letter from John Bishop Estlin, Liverpool, [England], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1846 November 5
Description:
John Bishop Estlin writes to Mary Anne Estlin regarding his last few hours with William Lloyd Garrison before his departure. He lists the attendees of his party including Garrison, Douglass, Wright, R.D. & Jas. H. Webb and other abolitionists. He writes that they watched him leave and he looked "quite lonely...he had not a friend on board." After Garrison's departure, they had a meeting in a hotel discussing anti-slavery proceedings and arrangements for starting a League. He writes of the departure of other abolitionists and writes of his travel plans back home. On the last page is a copy of Garrison's farewell message which begins "Farewell ye friends of liberty & justice-of God & man! I go, but leave my heart behind now, exhausting you to be faithful to the end...a glorious victory shall be yours!"
