Letter from F.J. Thompson, Bridgewater, [England], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1877 January 8
Description:
F.J. Thompson writes to Mary Anne Estlin in regards to the discord among the "(previously) united order of Good Templars." He writes that the "cause of the discord is the refusal of the Order in some of the States of America to receive the Negro as 'Brothers' of the Order. The prejudice of the White against the Black is such that they could exclude the colored race from their Lodges." He writes that chief templar of England separated from them because "there was no honest intention to place the despised class of them on equal footing with ourselves. It is extraordinary that any Englishmen can sink with the Americans in their...cold, unchristian visit." He inquires about what Garrison's sentiments are on this issue and asks that she post this letter to him. He includes a slip from the Bristol Post. Included in this letter from F.J. Thompson to Mary Anne Estlin is a newspaper article written by F.J. Thompson titled, "The Negro Question and the Good Templars" to the Editor of the Daily Post, November 22, 1876 in Bridgewater.
