Letter from James Ballard, Bennington, [Vermont], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1832 June 20
Description:
James Ballard writes to William Lloyd Garrison requesting him to send him a copy of his "book against the Colonization Society" (Garrison's "Thoughts on African Colonization") and giving him two dollars to pay for his Liberator subscription. He then reports he has "passed through many trying & interesting scenes" since Garrison visited and he describes the growth of his school, the Bennington Seminary, in spite of "violent opposition" against it. Ballard then encourages Garrison to marry, telling him, "My friend, could you be as fortunate as I have been I should advise you immediately to marry." He also supports Garrison's work in the antislavery movement, saying, "If there is any cause under heaven which demands boldness & uncompromising devotion it is the cause of emancipation."
