Description:
James Frederick Otis writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking if December 4 "has been ultimately fixed as the day for the holding of the Convention in Philadelphia" [that established the American Anti-Slavery Society]. Otis states, "We shall send a strong deputation from the 'Star in the East.' You know our motto is 'Dirigo.'"

On verso, the letter is addressed to "Wm Lloyd Garrison or, he being absent, Isaac Knapp Boston Mass." It is postmarked with a red, octagonal stamp reading, "Portland Me Nov 25" and a red seal is present along the spine edge.
