Letter from S.H. Kingsbury, Detroit, Michigan, to Caroline Weston, 1838 August 6
Description:
[S.H.] Kingsbury writes to Caroline Weston in regards to her limited service for the abolitionist cause. She writes that there is a society where she lives that does very little for the slave. She writes that her husband has changed his religious sentiments over abolition and "is more enlisted on the side of politics. He is a warm democrat professedly but I don't understand what democracy is unless it extends to the slaves. I have always thought I was a democrat until I came here, but the conduct of many who profess to be advocates of democracy have almost sickened me of the name of equal rights." She is sorry to hear of her sister, Maria Weston Chapman's illness. She hopes to correspond with her more in the future.
