Letter from Aurin Bugbee, Charlton, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1850 September 16
Description:
Aurin Bugbee writes to Samuel May about arrangements for the upcoming meeting in Charlton, telling May that the Town Hall is "opened for public Lectures on any subject." He describes comments made by an orthodox minister who told his audience that, "It was not their object to aid in the extinction of Slavery but to extend Perfidity." Bugbee warns this may keep people from attending the meeting. He says he has informed his congregation that May will "occupy my pulpit for the purpose of extending a knowledge of your views as to the bearings of scriptural backings upon the subject of slavery." Bugbee also tells May where Stephen S. Foster and Charles C. Burleigh will stay in Charlton, inviting May to stay with him while he is in town.
