Letter from James B. Whitcomb, Brooklyn, [Connecticut], to Samuel May, [18]51 July 29th
Description:
James B. Whitcomb writes to Samuel May saying that while he wishes to attend the August 1 celebrations commemorating emancipation in the British West Indies, "others from under our roof are going, and it it is necessary for some one to be about home." He tells May that he is "not in the least surprised that you could not make any arrangements for a reduced fare" on the Norwich and Worcester Railroad to attend the meeting, saying "they have a selfish, miserly instrument for their President." Whitcomb then says that he did not see the Christian Register newspaper and the remarks they made about May as he canceled his subscription to the newspaper because he "found it so conservative on the antislavery question that I did not feel well to patronize it." He tells May, "my spirit will be with you at the meeting although my body must necessarily be at a distance."
