Letter from Henry Wadsworth Carter, Athol, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1851 Sept[ember] 25th
Description:
H.W. Carter writes to Samuel May sharing his regret that William Lloyd Garrison cannot attend the upcoming meeting in Athol. Carter says that, "No one engaged in the A[nti] S[lavery] Reform has been maligned & misrepresented half so much as Mr. Garrison," and he thinks that if he came "he would do much to disabuse the minds of people and prepare them for the reception of A.S. truth." Carter tells May that Samuel Fulton Clarke "still persists in his objections to Mr. [Stephen S.] Foster" and refuses to invite him to the meeting. He tells May that he can either accept the invitation to speak in Clarke's church without Foster, or decline the invitation and continue with Foster, since most of the other meetings in the town are in the town hall. Carter suggests bringing Foster to Athol and holding the convention, leaving it to Clarke whether "to admit Mr. Foster to his pulpit for the sake of the cause ... or to reject you all and the cause with you, on account of his dislike to Mr. Foster."
