Letter from Betsey Newton to Maria Weston Chapman, [1840]
Description:
Betsey Newton writes to Maria Weston Chapman in regards to the hopes that women will do much for the slave at their convention, for "women's voice must not be hush'd while the clergy are recreant to the poor slave." She mentions the clerical dislike of Garrison, and deplores what was done at the ministerial convention in Worcester. She discusses her thoughts on the opposition to women's public activity and remarks, "I do hope that some means will be deriv'd by which women will be elevated."
