Letter from Moses Sawin, Southboro[ugh, Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1852 June 13th
Description:
Moses Sawin writes to Samuel May responding to May's proposal to have Stephen S. Foster and his wife, Abby Kelley Foster, lecture in Soutborough. Sawin says "it would be very agreeable to me if we could get an audience worth the trouble," but warns that "there is such a lethargy among our people and they are so overriden with a false religious sentiment that I am almost discouraged sometimes." He says that they could not get the town hall for a meeting in "under 4 weeks from today" and asks May if he would prefer the Foster's lecture this week, as he originally planned, or if they will wait until they have the town hall. Sawin tells May to "come when it is best and I will do all I can consistanly [sic] to get an audience ..." He also invites May to his house and says that his wife has died since they last saw each other.
