Letter from James Sloan Gibbons, New York, to Caroline Weston, 1842 July 6
Description:
James S. Gibbons writes to Caroline Weston in regards to sending her the address of Ezra C. Smith to whom Maria Weston Chapman has undertaken to write concerning "the matter of the harnessing with politicians." Ezra C. Smith proposes that C.H.Weld be appointed his associate agent. Weld says, "tho' not a member of 3rd party, 'he can with equal heartiness & good will, corporate with brethren who are, in promoting thegreat general principles of the ant-s[lavery]. enterprise & favor the circulation of their periodicals." He received a letter from Arnold Buffum, who presents a three year old claim of $60 which he has "long in vain, endeavored to secure, from the trustees." Buffum considers that "we are the legitimate Am[erican]. Society." He would like to know her views of the matter, his own being that such claims "are morally illegitimate. At least the claims of those who fraternized with the privacy are totally inadmissible." He describes his voyage home after leaving Boston.
