Letter from Joshua Coffin, Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania], to Maria Weston Chapman, 1842 Sept[ember] 26
Description:
Joshua Coffin writes to Maria Weston Chapman in regards to a letter about the escape of fugitive slaves. He writes, "there are now 31 persons here, men, women and children who are on their way to Canada & will start tomorrow morning." He tells about the excitement of the owners and the rewards offered for the fugitive slaves. The slaves' money was expended during the 12 days they were secreted in Baltimore. More fugitives are expected. As a final resort the writer turns to Maria for aid, and hopes she may appeal to to Boston female anti-slavery society. In Philadelphia there is a need of caution for fear of betrayal, and the management of the migration lies in the hands of a few.
