Description:
In this letter to William Lloyd Garrison, Lucretia Mott has copied a letter that was sent from Charles Calistus Burleigh to her son-in-law, Edward Morris Davis. Burleigh eulogizes the life of Garrison's brother-in-law, Henry Egbert Benson, calling him "a worthy & amiable young man ... a whole-souled abolitionist too, and a very valuable laborer in our cause." He describes his relationship with Benson and Benson's work in the antislavery movement, noting, "He has labored well and has gone to his rest early & his loss will be sensibly felt in New England by all who knew his worth." After copying Burleigh's letter, Mott tells Garrison that she thought "so just a tribute to the memory of a beloved friend would be acceptable to the family even at this late period."
