The Toy Theatre was built in 1914 on Dartmouth St., the site now occupied by the exit ramp of the Mass Pike. The billboard by the entrance announces English actress and manager Gertrude Kingston (1862-1937) and two plays by George Bernard Shaw: "Great Catherine" (written in 1913 specifically for Kingston in the title role), and "Overruled" (written 1912). The Toy Theatre production of "Great Catherine" was the first time it was played in America (Boston Evening Transcript, 1915).
