May 3, 1863. Captioned "Confederate caisson wagon and 8 horses on Maryes Heights, Fredericksburg, destroyed by explosion of a shell, from (a 32 pdr) 2nd Massachusetts Siege gun Battery on the Falmouth side of the Rappahannock May 3, 1863." Position was held by the Confederate Washington Artillery of New Orleans during the battle. View is looking northeast. Three men standing among ruins of caisson and dead horses. Brigadier General Herman Haupt is on the left. This photo was taken just after MHS.1948.1.3606.
