Letter from James Gillespie Birney, New York, to Amos Augustus Phelps, Feb. 4/40
Description:
James Gillespie Birney thanks Amos A. Phelps for his letter and says Mrs. Wisner received the money. With regard to the plan of the Executive Committee of the New York State Anti-Slavery Society, he says he cannot speak by authority. However, he expresses his own view that “[i]f the non-resistants can be completely failed—the present Committee reappointed—and the restrictive resolution rescinded all may go well.” Otherwise, he says “a new organization will, of course, be necessary.” He then discusses the growing probability of his trip to England.
