Letter from Samuel May, Jr., Leicester, [Mass.], to William Lloyd Garrison, Feb[ruary] 8 / [18]78
Description:
Samuel May, Jr. writes William Lloyd Garrison to thank him for both the copy of Garrison's letter to Mr. Chandler and the copy of "Travelles" which Garrison mailed to May. May questions Garrison's assertion that there exists in the South a general "spirit of hostility" towards both the Union and freedmen, stating that should this be the case, it "cannot long be hidden". May criticizes Garrison for his stance towards President Hayes, arguing that it is inappropriate to class Hayes with certain portions of his supporters on a moral level, declaring that Hayes' own character will be revealed through his deeds. May agrees that Hayes appears to be sorely lacking in "nerve, force, and decision", and inquires if Garrison is aware of Whittier's opinion of Hayes.
