Letter from Frederick Douglass, Dundee (Scotland), to Francis Jackson, 29th Jan. 1846
Description:
Frederick Douglass thanks Francis Jackson for his many kindness, and discusses historical interests of old Scotland. He is travelling with J.N. Buffum, attending meetings (“of the most soul cheering character”) and making efforts to persuade the Free Church of Scotland to return “their ill gotten gain” from the slaveholders. Douglass says the 1st edition of his book, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,” is nearly gone, and he is receiving great attention in Scotland as a black person. (“I find I am hardly black enough for British taste, but by keeping my hair as wooly as possible, I make out to pass for at least a half a negro at any rate.”)
