Letter from Oliver Johnson, New York, [N.Y.], to William Lloyd Garrison, Dec[ember] 10, 1872
Description:
Oliver Johnson writes William Lloyd Garrison after a six-month lapse in correspondance owing to Johnson's bereavement following the death of his wife, Mary Anne, whom Johnson states he innately associates with Garrison due to the "many scenes and events of the past" which the two of them had both been present with Johnson. Johnson states that the death of Horace Greeley grieves him greatly, and criticizes Garrison for his credulous appraisal of Greeley's character and motives for his presidential run in his articles in the Indepedent, stating that Garrison has been "prejudiced, mistaken, unwise". Johnson closes by announcing that he is to leave his post at the Tribune to become the managing editor at the Christian Union.
