Bates Hall is the main reading room of the library. It is 218 ft. long, 42 1/2 ft. wide and 50 ft. to the top of the barrel-arched ceiling.
Notes (historical):
The Boston Public LIbrary's main branch on the west side of Copley Square opened to the public in March 1895. Newton W. Elwell created photographs of the interior and exterior of the building, which were then collected into a published volume entitled "The Boston Public Library" in 1896.
