Letter from Simeon Smith Jocelyn, New York, to Amos Augustus Phelps, July 8th 1837
Description:
In this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Simeon Smith Jocelyn recalls his encounter with Owen Davis on Phelps’s request. Davis was visiting for an institution for the black, and had dinner with a group of them in spite of his apparent discomfort to dine with white people. An acquaintance said that he warned some of the blacks against Davis, but that Davis did not pretend to carry Birney’s recommendation [as he has apparently been accused].
