This is a rough draft of a letter by Maria Weston Chapman to Nathaniel B. Borden acknowledging a donation of $10 for the Liberty Bell. Chapman thanks Borden for informing her "of the state of feeling & action on the cause in congress." She reflects on the measures proposed by "men of doubtful honesty." She cites the case of Charles Turner Torrey, who is reported as "in prison awaiting his trial as an incendiary." Chapman entreats Borden's good offices in Torrey's aid. Although Torrey has been "an enemy to the abolitionists...it matters not to them...in whose person the rights of civilization are violated."
This letter is written on the blank pages and margins of a circular (flier) advertising dancing and waltzing lessons at Mrs. Hunt's school of dance.
