Maria Weston Chapman reflects on people who want to "feel the comfort of being a trampled minority after the time has gone by, and they are the party in power." She describes the effect of the current state of apprehension among the circle. Maria W. Chapman's own house was watched because of the cries heard, "To Mrs. Chapman's!" She tells of "run-away rings" at her door [people who run away after ringing her door]. In one case, the ringer later turned out to have been "Willie Garrison," sent to fetch Mrs. Maria Chapman to Ann Terry Greene [Phillips]'s house, who did not feel safe.
