- Description:
-
Col. Samuel Jaques house. Built before 1800 by Captain Archibald McNeil, son of the Daniel McNeil who had left Ireland for America on the day King George II was born. It was purchased in 1794. The First Baptist Church now at the other corner of what used to be this estate. Along the shore of the bay (just about where the buildings on the lower side of Lynde Street now stand) they built a ropewalk extending from what later became Arrow Street to the site of the present state prison making the tip of what later became known as Prison Point. Their mansion was this large square wooden building, which at the time faced Bow Street and was surrounded by a large area of green fields and pastures, uncrossed by any roads except the passageway between it and the ropewalk. Their view was unobstructed across the bay to Barrell's farm on Cobble Hill (later the McLean Asylum) and Cambridgeport, Brookline, and the west end of Boston. Col. Samuel Jaques purchased the house and about two acres of land whereon he pastured not only cattle, but American bison, and built stables and kennels for saddle horses and hunting dogs, besides a rare garden in which was developed the Jaques Admirable peach. The stable had round windows in the gable ends and there were arched doorways and openings in the carriage house and sheds. Col. Jaques has some of the best trotting horses and pacers in this country, and in his pond at the corner of the pasture swam wild geese and ducks of many varieties. Fox hunting on horseback with hounds and horn began at these grounds. General Lafayette was entertained here on one of his two visits to Charlestown (Aug. 27, 1824 and June 17, 1825.
