Description:
Military personnel outside of the Cambridge Massachusetts State Armory during recruitment activities for the Mexican Border Service. The sign over the armory reads, "Men Wanted for the Militia, Apply at the Cambridge State Armory." The participation of the Massachusetts National Guard in the Mexican Border Service in the summer of 1916 was part of a larger campaign by the US Army to help quell raids and disturbances along the US Mexican Border by outlaws and bandits, including Poncho Villa. The Mexican Border Service proved to be important experience for the Massachusetts National Guard. The mobilization and training the Mexican Border Service helped to prepare the Massachusetts National Guard for combat during World War I.
