The author and date of the following information is unknown. On back: V. Birthplace of John Lewis Crane. One of the Original Settlers of Washington. This house was probably built between 1790 and 1800. About 1800, it was owned by Captain Horace Herrick, the clothier, who ran a carding mill and a woolen factor. The mill being located just above the house on the Mountain Brook. It was originally a part of the Elijah Crane property and was bought by Amos. S. Crane, who married and settled here. His five children were born here: John L. Crane born September 9 1829, married Mary A. Hill of North Brookfield, Mass. September 15 1858. He went to Kansas and was actively engaged with John Brown in excluding slave holders from that state. He was killed during the massacre at Lawrence, by Quantrell's bands of raiders, on the morning of August 21, 1863, when they called him from his bed to the door and shot him down on his own doorstep. His widow died October 16, 1880, aged 74 years. George S. Crane born August 27 1831. Ellen M. Crane born January 3, 1833. Luther K. Crane born March 31, 1835. James P. Crane born July 22, 1840. Amos Crane moved to Suffield, in 1847. The farm was then sold to Jacob Foster, who lived here until 1856, when it was bought by John M. Crane, a younger brother of Amos. He sold it to Ezra Warner, 1884 and Mr. Warner sold it to Dr. Peer of New York and it is now owned by Carl Peer, who is not a relative, however, of Dr. Peer. The farm is now split up.
