William Lloyd Garrison read with surprise and regret that Wendell Phillips Garrison did not secure the appointment of the "ushership" in the Latin School. Wendell P. Garrison should do as he feels inclined in regard to the high school in Warwick, Rhode Island, but he should not feel uneasy about staying home unemployed. William L. Garrison fears that the typesetters will have trouble with Amory Dwight Mayo's handwriting. He comments on the theft of R. F. Wallcut's wallet containing $70. Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman wrote that her sister, Lucia Weston, died. William Lloyd Garrison writes about Lucia's passing: "It is a blow that will be heavily felt by the family, but it has been much longer delayed than I anticipated. She was a very amiable girl, and deservedly beloved." William M. Chace's mills are shut down because of the war. Fanny Garrison picked six quarts of huckeberries in Cumberland, R.I. Today, there was an easterly storm with heavy rain.
