Letter from John Bishop Estlin, Bristol, to Samuel May, Nov. 3rd, 1847
Description:
Estlin says that the "answer" to the Boston invitation has been sent to Reverend James F. Clarke, care of Mr. Waterston. Estlin tells May that the answer had 54 ministers' and 148 lay signatures. Estlin says that William Henry Ashurst sent a circular to "The Liberator," which seems to have been similar in content to the "answer." Estlin discusses the incident at length. He asks if May has seen Raffaele Ciocci's "Narrative of Iniquities and Barbarities Practiced at Rome in the Nineteenth Century." Estlin says that the second to last paragraph in the "answer" aroused much opposition.
