Copy of the draft of the reply to the Irish address from Samuel May, to the Irish Unitarian Christian Society, [1846?]
Description:
Andrew Preston Peabody apologizes for the delay in answering the Address and explains that the American Unitarian Association has no permanent committee to handle formal communications. The writer congratulates the Irish Unitarians on the passage of the Dissenters' Chapel Bill. He claims that Unitarian aims are misunderstood by the Irish Unitarians and says that American Unitarians have done the best they can to combat slavery. There is a division of opinion among Unitarians as to the best method of abolishing slavery.
Holograph.
May's note at the beginning of the letter reads, "Copy of the draught of a letter (by Rev. A. P. Peabody) intended as a reply to the Irish Address." May's note at the end of the letter reads, "Draft of which above in copy - received by me Oct. 3. 1846."
