Letter from Samuel May, Boston, to Richard Davis Webb, July 21, 1854
Description:
May discusses some financial transactions and account balances. In a continuation of the letter, dated July 30 from Leicester, May alerts Webb that he cannot increase the subscription list of "The Anti-Slavery Advocate" in America because the burden of supporting the other anti-slavery papers is as much as abolitionists can bear. He comments on the new form of the "National Anti-Slavery Standard." In the final installment of the letter, dated August 4 from Leicester, May further discusses the particulars of their financial accounts. He tells Webb that he wants Parker Pillsbury to organize the Glasgow and Edinburgh abolitionists. He mentions August 1 celebrations at Abington Grove in Plymouth County, at Hopedale in Worcester County, and in Flushing, New York. May ends by discussing international politics, including the tense situation between the United States and Spain over Cuba and the pending "treaty of amity" between the United States and Russia.
