Letter from Samuel May, Leicester, [Mass.], to Richard Davis Webb, April 14, 1865
Description:
May says that he had one of Alfred Webb's letters printed in "The Liberator." He refers to James Russell Lowell's "The Unhappy Lot of Mr. Knott" and rejoices over the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. May attacks England's aid to the south during the war and particularly its conduct in regard to the Confederate States Ship, the "Alabama." May notes a change in the British attitude toward the "Alabama" claims. He exclaims, "this is the day of the Raising of the Old Flag at Fort Sumter!" and describes President Abraham Lincoln's walk through the streets of Richmond.
