Letter from Samuel May, Leicester, Mass., to Richard Davis Webb, July 3, 1866
Description:
May describes the events leading up to the issuance of the "National Testimonial to William Lloyd Garrison." He informs Webb that he went to Washington to obtain signatures and that he has been circulating the testimonial as widely as possible. May describes Garrison's financial circumstances and tells Webb that Garrison has been victim to two accidental falls. He asserts that the $50,000 to be given to Garrison is not a gift, but a payment for services rendered. May says "thus far the subscriptions amount to $9000." He attacks Andrew Johnson.
