Description:
In this copy of an original letter dated October 9, 1843 from Geneva, May reviews the events of his visit to Bristol and discusses the attitude of the English Unitarians toward slavery and the address to the American Unitarian ministers from the British Unitarians. He complains of the failure of the American Unitarians to take an interest in the abolition of slavery and says that there is opposition to any discussion of the subject among them. May mentions the anti-slavery articles of Andrew Preston Peabody of Portsmouth, New Hampshire in "The Christian Examiner." He says that the abolitionists believe that dissemination of the truth about slavery will cause its downfall. He discusses the hostility of the clergy towards the abolitionists, tells about Reverend William Ellery Channing, and refers to the motto "Christo in Pauperibus."
