Gannett replies to Samuel Joseph May's assertion that the remark about the abolitionists attributed to him by May in his "Recollections of the Anti-Slavery Conflict" was in fact made at a meeting of ministers in Boston. Gannett reiterates his views about the Fugitive Slave Law and complains that the abolitionists charged him and others with unworthy motives. / Samuel Joseph May writes a letter to his cousin, Samuel May, on the reverse of Gannett's letter. Samuel Joseph May's letter is dated December 1, 1869 from Syracuse.
