Men at work making boots in the Isaac Prouty & Co. boot factory. The men are tacking and treeing the boots. Workers would put the tacks in their mouths, spit them onto the boots, and then hammer in the tacks. In 1820 Isaac Prouty began making boots out of his home. When his business became too large for his home he built a shop nearby. By 1872 the company employed three hundred workers inside the factory and as many outside.
