Abel Allen Jr. house, Shumway Hill, north side of Douty Road, Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Abel Allen Jr. was born March 30, 1766 son of Abel and Jerusha Tarbel Allen, married Experience, and died in 1827. The house Abel owned in 1798 was valued at $200 which does not represent the house currently standing. It has been noted that the back ell (kitchen) was moved from across the garden to join the main house. The house has original fireplaces in the old part. Features of the single story structure attached to the back ell suggests it is a much earlier house, probably one listed on the 1798 direct tax. House was occupied successively by Abel, his son Charles Grovesner Allen (1809-?), and grandson, Charles Hamant Allen (1837-1895) until the death of the latter. Current known as the Barrett farm, the Barrett family has owned the farm for a number of years. In this photo a team of oxen is being led down the road towards the east. Barns and sheds are on the south side of the road.
