1 v. - Manuscript - Richard T. Sullivan of Newton Upper Falls, who eventually became a prominent woolen manufacturer and leader in Massachusetts politics, went to Cuba (Isla de Cuba), passing through Havana and Matanzas on his way to work on Plantation San Luis and Plantation Guamutas. He was apparently charged with keeping accounts of shoes, metal parts (chains, hooks, bolts, nails, etc.) This lined notebook covering 1859-1862 is his book of accounts and his diary in which he recounts his experiences riding horses from estate to estate, the food and drink, the unhealthy climate, sick workers in the infirmary, homesickness, wanting letters from home. He includes a poem written to his wife, Mary. Also includes a newspaper clipping of his obituary in 1895. -
