Copy of letter from Amos Augustus Phelps, Boston, to Henry Jones Ripley, June 27th 1837
Description:
Amos A. Phelps writes to Ripley that Mr. Collins, who is visiting Lynn, agreed to free his slave, Clarissa, and to allow her to remain in the North if she chooses. Although Mr. Collins insists that Clarissa prefers returning to the South with them, an interview with Clarissa suggested that she would prefer remaining in the North if her husband, Abram, can join her. Phelps asks Ripley to send for Abram so that he can join her. Phelps will convince Abram to choose to be freed.
Holograph, signed.
Title devised by cataloger.
The manuscript is stamped, "PHELPS, MSS."
At the top of the letter: "Copy of Letter To Prof. Ripley of Newton."
Legacy card catalog lists "Henry John Ripley" as the recipient of this letter. The letter refers to the recipient only as Prof. Ripley. Research indicates it probably is "Henry Jones Ripley," a professor who died in Newton Center in 1875.
