Letter from Amos Augustus Phelps, Boston, to John Angell James, Aug 25th 1840
Description:
Amos A. Phelps writes to John Angell James about the way Oberlin College is being represented through public speeches in Britain. Offering extracts from other people, Phelps compares Oberlin College with a few other institutions, such as Dartmouth College at Hanover, N.H., Bowdoin College at Brunswick, Maine, and Oneida Institute at Utica, New York, on the subject of the education of scholars regardless of color. On the last two pages, marked “Private,” Phelps writes about the notion of “Christian perfection” at Oberlin, as well as the subject of “the resolution on church action” published through a recent convention. He says that, in spite of the misrepresentation propagated by Garrison’s associates, the clergy is a significant part of the abolitionist movement.
