Letter from Lewis White, Waterbury, [Conn.], to William Lloyd Garrison, July 31st 1872
Description:
Lewis White writes William Lloyd Garrison stating that, if he is "not mistaken", Garrison's "sympathies for the coloured race" would not permit Garrison to using his influence "in throwing them into the clutches of the democratic party". White asserts that nothing could happen to the United States that could be worse than the election of Horace Greeley, whom he declines to refer to by name, acknowledging him only as the "nominee of the democrats". White suggests that Garrison appeal to the African-American community to urge them to support the reelection of Grant.
