Letter from William Goodell, Utica, to Amos Augustus Phelps, 13 April 1837
Description:
William Goodell writes to Amos A. Phelps about his (Goodell’s) controversy with Leonard Bacon, and Gerrit Smith’s public letter to Bacon which could “do us much harm” due to some vagueness which he (Goodell) failed to prevent due to the inopportune timing of his letter to Smith. He asks Phelps to weigh a few options for handling Smith’s letter for publication (e.g., publish it after Phelps communicates with Smith, or publish with clarifying notes. He describes his discussion about the case of Bacon with Jocelyn.
