Letter from Rufus Austin Putnam, Chichester, to Amos Augustus Phelps and Orange Scott, Mar 27. 1839
Description:
In this letter to Amos A. Phelps (and Orange Scott), Rufus Austin Putman expresses his sadness for the ongoing situation. He says that he is unable to attend the meeting of the “the National Society” (presumably the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society) in New York, but that he hopes to be listed as its member. He criticizes the old society’s position on the “woman question” and the “non-government theory.” He then expresses his objection to one particular clause in the constitution of the “Am. Soc.”
